Ask any doctor or pharmacist how many of their patients report a penicillin allergy, and you’ll find an astoundingly high number of self-reported penicillin allergic patients. As much as 10% of the population says they have a penicillin allergy. But this number appears to be falsely high.
Penicillin is a common antibiotic used to treat many illnesses. When it was discovered it was considered a breakthrough in the treatment of illness and infection. It is derived from the penicillin mold, the blue-green mold found on moldy oranges. Before penicillin, common infections and diseases that are only a nuisance to us today were quite often fatal. For years penicillin was the only effective antibiotic treatment available for doctors to use. It is relatively cheap and easy to manufacture, making it the most often used antibiotic world wide.
Accurate diagnosis and treatment are very important because some allergies are dangerous and may cause to death of patient. Skin test is the most commonly preferred method in spotting the causes of allergy symptoms; it still has some drawbacks also. While most people experience swelling or itching immediately after direct contact of a product, other people may display these symptoms several hours or even days after the skin test.
An allergic reaction to penicillin may not appear immediately but may take a few to several days to be exhibited. It can show up as an itchy rash. If you notice any swelling of the face, throat or breathing issues you should seek medical attention immediately. Anaphylactic shock is serious and having one’s airway obstructed can be an emergency situation. This usually occurs shortly after taking the medication whereas the antibiotic rash may not manifest itself for several days.

They stimulate the body to produce antibodies, which weaken or destroy the invading antigens. In some cases, when an antibody reacts with an antigen, the organic compound histamine is released from special body cells called mast cells. It is an excess of histamine that results in allergy symptoms.
Physicians, who are specialists in dealing with allergic diseases, undergo extensive training. In the United States a minimum of nine years is required to qualify as an allergist immunologist. It is reassuring to know that very significant improvements in medical treatments have been developed by allergists. They include fast acting epinephrine tablets, low allergy foods, and advances in dealing with yellow jacket (wasp) stings.
Eczema looks different in each child, but mild cases usually cause dry, scaly red and itchy patches of skin. The intense itching is particularly distressing for children, and young babies may rub their faces on their cot sheets or clothes. In severe cases the skin may weep, crust and bleed, leaving it prone to infection. According to the NES, atopic eczema usually starts on the face and scalp but often spreads to other areas, especially inside the elbows and behind the knees. In severe cases it can cover most of the body.
Of the food allergy categories, shellfish and peanut allergies are quite common and can very serious, even leading to death. Many of the signs and symptoms related to food allergies include rashes, itching, nasal congestion, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, swelling of the lips, tongue and/or throat.
Causes of Allergies
Although modern medicine claims that allergies and most of the other chronic diseases have a hereditary predisposition to blame, homeopaths and naturopaths all over the world believe that every disease is multi-factorial in origin. Health according to them is a dynamic state of physical, mental, and spiritual equilibrium where a homeostasis is maintained in spite of a continuous influx and interaction of the opposing or negative energies with the life perpetuating ones through harmoniously orchestrated processes that are so subtle that they can hardly be perceived.
Penicillin rash or penicillin allergy is something seen in some children taking antibiotics. Unknown to most people, penicillin or some antibiotic in the same family can cause a skin reaction as well as stomach problems if your body can’t tolerate it. In children it is not uncommon to see a slight rash or form of hives result as a reaction to the antibiotic.
