Often, your dermatologist recommends a topical steroid for eczema flare ups. But what is a topical steroid? It is any cream, ointment or lotion that contains a steroid. They work by reducing inflammation in the skin and are used for various skin rashes including eczema. These topical treatments are occasionally called corticosteroids.

And, although these topical steroids can work best to relieve a flare up, are they a safe alternative for your child? A period of years back, my physician suggested a steroid for me. In the interest of fairness, I should mention that under most circumstances, mild steroids used for short periods of time are usually safe and, for most people, cause no serious health issues. However, issues can show up if the treatment is used for extended periods of time, or if used frequently.

The main concern for this problem is with children who need frequent courses of powerful topical steroids to control their condition. The steroid can have an effect on their growth. Although there are a number of other potential side effects, these are the main ones that effect children.
