Taking Care of Damaged Skin by Andy Roberts
Most skin disorders are not life-threatening diseases, but they are unattractive and can affect the way people feel about themselves due to their appearance. Skin conditions can occur anywhere on a person’s face or body. Not only are they unsightly and uncomfortable, but many times they can be quite painful because of terrible burning, itching.
Doctors are unclear about what causes some skin conditions, but many believe that there is a variety of factors that may play a role in their development. Stress, heredity, hormonal changes, the environment, allergies, and reactions to certain medications are some of the factors. In addition to acne, there are other common skin conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea, and diabetic skin disorders. Here is a brief overview of these skin disorders and their treatments.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin disease in which the life cycle of skin cells accelerates at a rapid pace. This leads to a build-up of dead cells on the skin’s surface, causing silvery scales and dry red patches. Psoriasis causes itching and pain as well.
The chronic disease, Psoriasis, has periods of severe symptoms that alternate with phases of remission. While it is only a nuisance to some people, others find the disease debilitating. This is especially true for people with arthritis.
According to the Mayo Clinic, doctors are uncertain what causes psoriasis. The immune system and the environment are likely factors, and genetics may also play a role. Treatments aim to slow down the production of skin cells, remove cell build-up, and soothe irritated skin.
Topical treatment, laser therapy, and prescription drugs are the most common treatment methods. Psoriasis cream or ointment is generally effective in mild to moderate cases. Severe cases require psoriasis cream combined with oral medications or light therapy. While moisturizing psoriasis cream cannot heal psoriasis, it can reduce the redness and itching associated with the disease.
Rosacea
Another common skin condition is Rosacea. It causes redness on the face, and small pus-filled bumps called pustules. Rosacea tends to progress if left untreated, yet the condition is cyclical. Symptoms may flare for a few weeks or months and diminish, but eventually they will flare up again.
Like psoriasis, the cause of rosacea is unknown. Doctors think genetics and the environment are factors. Certain things can aggravate rosacea, worsening its condition. Influences such as spicy foods, alcohol, hot foods and drinks, sunlight, extreme temperatures, hot baths, corticosteroids, and emotions like anger, stress, and embarrassment are all believed to cause Rosacea.
Rosacea has no cure, and treatment combines prescription medications with lifestyle changes. Topical treatment includes rosacea creams, lotions, and gels. Rosacea creams are sometimes combined with oral medications, especially in severe cases. In addition to rosacea creams and oral medications, doctors often prescribe antibiotics. Enlarged blood vessels and permanent redness may require surgery.
Diabetic Skin
According to the American Diabetes Association, one-third of diabetics have skin disorders. These include general skin conditions, such as bacterial and fungal infections or itching. They also include diabetes-related conditions, like dermopathy, necrobiosislipoidicadiabeticorum (NLD), and atherosclerosis.
In addition to these conditions, diabetic skin can have allergic reactions, diabetic blisters, digital sclerosis, and other disorders. Diabetic skin care is important, as many of these conditions can develop into life-threatening infections.
Diabetics who think they have a bacterial or fungal infection, NLD, or unexplained rashes should see their doctor. He or she will examine the skin to make a correct diagnosis and recommend the proper diabetic skin care. For many people who need Diabetic skin care it will consist of combining Rosacea creams, Psoriasis cream, antibiotics and a other mixtures of medicines.
