Starflower oil, also known as borage oil, has a couple key benefits that other oils don’t have. For one thing, starflower oil has the highest concentration of GLA, or Gamma Linolenic Acid, on the planet. That might not mean anything to you right now, but it will by the end of this article. By ingesting high concentrations of GLA, the body can skip the initial conversion process of linoleic acid to gamma linolenic acid and be on its way to making helpful prostaglandins. A variety of studies have been performed seeking to determine what kind of a role GLA has in skin conditions, especially inflammatory conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It appears that often, when a person suffers from those kinds of skin conditions that their body also seems to be deficient in GLA. A specific enzyme exists that the body needs in order to convert linoleic acid into GLA, and in some persons, this enzyme can either be deficient or not perfection functional and can cause the body to be lacking in GLA. So giving persons with that condition direct GLA into the diet seems to greatly benefit them.
In general, Omega essential fatty acids seem to show positive skin benefits when supplemented. Persons suffering from conditions such as psoriasis and eczema have shown improvements by taking Omega essential fatty acids. The main reason for this seems to be the prostaglandins that are formed from Omega fatty acids. These prostaglandins are very useful and help the body to regulate healthy skin function, but are also very complex and can easily be deficient in the body. Not only is that true, but Omega essential fatty acids actually comprise the cell membrane of each cell in the human body, and some studies indicate that a diet with an improper ratio of the different Omega fatty acids can actually hinder the cellular membrane of the body’s cells and can cause the cells to have poor nutritional uptake, which can often manifest in skin symptoms. So if you’re a person who doesn’t know whether or not they have enough Omega fatty acids in their diet, then starflower oil might be something you should look into a bit more. There are a variety of methods by which a person can get a better supply of Omega fatty acids into their normal diet. But for GLA, starflower oil can’t be beat and offers many great benefits.
