Where Does Tamanu Oil Come From?
We have probably come to the most exotic oil of them all when it comes to anti-flammatory and analgesic properties of a fixed (carrier) oil plant. The plant that this oil comes from is known in Latin as the ‘Calophyllum inophyllum’ and is indigenous to the South Sea and Polynesian Islands. The plant hosts beautiful leathery and glossy dark green foliage and bears fragrant white flowers and fruit. It is commonly known as the beauty leaf and some of its other names of which it is known by are the Alexandrian Laurel, Kamanu (Hawaii) Tamanu (South Seas) Poon & Kamani (India) Fetau (Samoa) and Faraha (Madagasca).
Ancient Uses
Throughout history Callophyllum has been an important traditional medicine of the South Pacific Islands where it has been put to good use in healing inflammatory and painful conditions. One of its major uses was in the treatment of leprosy and skin burns – and one of the important properties that has made it so useful for healing skin conditions such as, psoriasis is its phagocytosis and cicatrizant properties that encourage skin cells to regenerate and heal. It also has other wonderful healing benefits that are analgesic (pain relieving) and anti-inflammatory.
Oil Characteristics
To obtain Tamanu oil the fruits and the seeds are collected and cold pressed (this means that the oil is extracted without the use of heat or chemicals and therefore it retains all its nutrients and healing properties). This extraction process leaves a dark pasty mass that is rich in triacylglycerols – a basic fatty compound.
The first time that I used Tamanu oil I was a little taken back by its very grey black colour and its viscous (thick) appearance. It really didn’t look like an inviting oil to use but it is beautiful and one of the most non-irritant oils around. It is such a gentle oil that it can be applied on extremely sensitive mucus membranes and therefore it is an ideal treatment for inflammation of the vagina and other delicate body areas.

How Tamanu Oil Can Help Tennis Elbow
Tamanu oil has come to be one of my favourite oils to use especially because of its non-irritant properties. It has also shown to be effective in relieving pain and inflammation. This oil above all others, if you have sensitive skin, would be great to massage into your sore tennis elbow to ease the pain and promote healing in the area.
On a final note because of the sensitivity of children’s skin, it is also a wonderful oil to have as part of your medicine cabinet as it can be safely used on even babies and infants.
