Colitis Definition
It is inflammatory disease affecting the large bowel or the colon.
Colitis Causative factors
It is a disorder of vitiation of Pitta in the large intestine. In the colon, the min seat of Vata, nutrients from the digested food are absorbed and the matter is rendered drier. The exact cause of this disease is not known. However wrong eating habits, consumption of pre-cooked food, food without fiber; and inflammation is the probable main causes. Similarly hereditary, immunological dysfunction and allergic etiology is possible. Some patients are allergic to gluten, while some to dairy products. Psychological stress and strain is also an important causative factor.
Colitis Symptoms
Dyspepsia, pain and tenderness at the site of colon, diarrhea with or without mucous and blood, abdominal pain relieved by defecation, fever, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. Many times the symptoms increase or decrease periodically without any cause. When the patient starts feeling that he is getting beneficial results to treatment, suddenly all symptoms may increase. If it is not treated properly, various complications like anemia and mal-absorption develop. In some patients, allergic manifestations on the skin appear such as eczema.
Colitis Treatment
Herbs of choice are asparagus racemosus, licorice, dashmoola or ten roots, sida cordifolia, and bombax malabarica. Panchakarma procedures like medicated sesame oil enema, alternating with cleansing enema should be given in courses, depending upon the symptoms and gravity of the disease. To treat inflammation, cleansing enema with asparagus an licorice should be given.
Vata type- cleansing enema of ten roots is indicated. Parpati is the treatment of choice. Rasa parpati (BR) 100 MGM, TWICE DAY, OR SUVARNA PARPATI (yr) 100 mgm, once a day, with dashmoolarishta 15ml 3 times day should be given.
Pitta type â Panchamrut parpati 250 mgm, 3 times day should be given. Mixture of 1 gm. Of amlaki powder and shatavari powder (equal pats) and licorice powder (1/2 part), twice day is useful. If thee is bleeding with the stools, medicated enema containing gum of bombax malabarica and milk an ghee I excellent. It will stop bleedinimmediately.
Kapha type- Loha parpati 100 mgm, twice day, with kutajarishta 15ml. 3 times a day is indicated.
Colitis Diet
Avoid all food that irritates the colon and causes vitiation of Pitta and blood.
The symptoms are uncomfortable and more than a little scary: abdominal pain, blood or mucus in the stool, diarrhea, cramping, urgent bowel movements, weight loss, and more. When you have colitis, a serious inflammation of the colon, you may feel as if youâll never be comfortable again.
Doctors arenât sure that causes colitis, although they think it may steam from infection or problems with the immune system. There also appears to be a genetic link â if your parents have colitis, youâre at a higher risk of getting it, too. One of the worst things about colitis is that itâs so unpredictable. In some cases it goes away for weeks, months, or even years at a time then comes roaring back.
There are things you can do at home, however, to reduce the symptoms and make this painful condition a little bit easier to live with.
Keep eating well. Itâs hard to keep up your appetite when your insides are acting up, but itâs critical for people with colitis to eat plenty of vegetables, whole grains, and other nutritious foods. This condition can cause the body to lose enormous amounts of nutrients. Eating well as often as you can, will help your body become strong and able to cope with the discomfort.
But keep track of what you eat. For many people, certain foods appear to trigger colitis flare-ups, or to make the symptoms theyâre already suffering worse. There is not one food that is right â or wrong âfor everyone, so itâs up to you to discover if certain foods are causing your problems. Doctors often recommend that people with colitis keep a food diary, in which they write down everything theyâre eating. That way, when your symptoms return, youâll be able to look back and see what may have contributed to the problem â and what youâll want to avoid next time.
Use fiber wisely. Research suggests that eating fruits, vegetables, and other fiber rich foods can help prevent colitis flare-ups. On the other hand, eating fiber when youâre already having symptoms may make you feel worse instead of better. Doctors usually recommend that people with colitis get plenty of fiber in their diets when theyâre feeling well, then cut back on it during bad times. During flare-ups, many people still eat fruits and vegetables, but peel them to remove a lot of the fiber. This is one time when you may want to use canned fruits and vegetables. They have less fiber than fresh.
Go easy on dairy. Many people with colitis have difficulty digesting lactose, a sugar in milk and other dairy foods. You may find that giving up dairy â or at least eating less of it â will help relieve your symptoms.
Cystitis is a very uncomfortable and painful condition caused by inflammation of the bladder. The symptoms are an aching pain in the lower back and abdomen and the most fiery pain when passing water. The inflammation and infection may pass to the kidneys so you must seek professional advice. If you receive antibiotics in treatment you would be well advised to eat a large pot of plain live yoghurt daily as a precaution against vaginal thrush. Although too much over enthusiastic lovemaking can cause cystitis it is not a âsocial diseaseâ but is often the result of a bad catarrhal infection, kidney stones or hormone pills. Whatever the cause, warmth and rest are essential.
Home Remedies for Cystitis – Soothing Essential oils
You will probably feel so miserable if you are suffering from cystitis that the kindest remedy is a warm bath to which you have added a few drops of oil of pine. To further pamper yourself and help bring about a cure a few drops of cedar wood oil should be rubbed into the lower abdomen. A trick taught me when I was pregnant and very dubious about taking any âdrugsâ was to make up the following; a few drops each of essential oil of juniper, pine, parsley and sandalwood in a cup of sunflower oil. This I rubbed into my lower abdomen (when I could find it), my lower back and , amazingly, the backs of my knees. Finally hop into a warm bed and keep a well-wrapped hot water bottle against the backs of the knees.
Drinks to Bring Relief
* Water Drink lots of tepid water not before, not during but after you have made love if you are prone to cystitis.
* Chervil, horsetail, shepherdâs purse and birch leaf A tea of any one of these herbs will bring relief.
* Bilberry leaves Infuse 25g (1oz) of bilberry leaves in 1 litre (1.75 pints) of boiling water for 15 minutes. Drink 2 or 3 cups daily to ease the pain of cystitis. Good home remedy for cystitis.
* Potato water Drink the water from boiled potatoes (Do not cook them in an aluminum saucepan.)
* Sweet corn Make a tea from the silky tassels of th cob and also eat the fresh vegetable.
* Cherry stalks and peach leaf tea One teaspoon of each in 600 ml (1 pint) of water soothes considerably.
* Cherry stalks were at one time used as a diuretic.
* Cherries As well as the stalks, the fruit themselves are good for you. If you often suffer from kidney disorders and cystitis frequently recurs make this delicious syrup and drink by the tablespoon.
Cherry Syrup
500g (11b) cherries (preferably a cooking variety)
175 ml (6fl oz) water
unrefined cane sugar
Wash the cherries, keeping their stalks on, and put them into a double boiler with the water. Cook gently until the fruit is very soft, helping the process along with a little judicious mashing with a wooden spoon, if necessary. Crush a few of the stones and add the kernels to the pan. When the cherries are pulpy strain them through a muslin cloth, squeezing out every last drop of juice. Measure the liquid and for every 500 ml (1 pint) take 250g (8oz) of sugar. Put both in a saucepan and heat gently, stirring well, until the sugar has dissolved. Boil gently to a syrupy consistency and bottle in a dry, hot container. Seal tightly. It will keep for quite a long time if refrigerated. One of the good home remedies for cystitis.
* Marsh mallow A decoction of marsh mallow is often used to help you âspend a pennyâ. However in this case it is used to offset the effects of taking antibiotics : 1 teaspoon of marsh mallow root to 1 cup of boiling water, left to stand for five minutes and then sweetened with honey.
