The appendix is located on the lower right side of the abdomen. It is a 3-1/2 inch finger-like organ that extends from the colon or the large intestine.
Although there are arguments about the purpose of the organ, no one is absolutely certain of its function. People can live without this organ. Its removal does not cause any unfavorable consequences. Ironically, when the appendix becomes inflamed, reddened and filled with pus, this results to appendicitis which, if untreated, can cause death.
Appendicitis is considered to be a surgical illness. Due to its severe character, the treatment for appendicitis often involves surgical intervention. Judging by the speed of development and the gravity of the illness, appendicitis can be either acute or chronic.
Acute appendicitis evolves very fast and can lead to complications. Chronic appendicitis is less serious and slower to develop. Although there are other options, the safest treatment for appendicitis is considered to be surgery.
The cause of appendicitis is the obstruction of the appendicle lumen leading to increased pressure, irregular blood circulation and inflammation of the mucous. The blockage must be resolved before it produces gangrene or perforation.
Appendicitis (or epityphlitis ) is a condition characterized by inflammation of the appendix.
Appendicitis begins when the opening from the appendix into the cecum becomes blocked. This rock is called a fecalith (literally, a rock of stool). The appendix is a part of the bowel that doesn’t have any known use to humans. It is a small tube about 5-10cm long that is found at the end of the caecum (the small pouch near the start of the large intestine). In the United States, 1 in 15 people gets appendicitis.
Diagnosis of mittelschmerz is generally made if a woman is mid-cycle and a pelvic examination shows no abnormalities. Only 20% – 30% of of women will have mittelschmerz or ovulation pains – and please note that mittelschmerz may occur before, during, or even after ovulation. Women with mittelschmerz rarely need to go to a hospital’s Emergency Department, but some serious medical conditions such as appendicitis and ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy in the tubes) can mimic the pain of ovulation.
Abdominal pain is pain that is felt in the abdomen. This is often referred to as the stomach region or belly. Pain in the abdomen can come from any one of them. The pain may start somewhere else, such as your chest. Severe pain doesn’t always mean a serious problem. The abdomen is an anatomical area that is bounded by the lower margin of the ribs above, the pelvic bone below, and the flanks on each side.
Symptoms of appendicitis cannot be attributed to this particular illness only, as they can be shared with other diseases as well. It is comparatively harder to detect the symptoms of appendicitis amongst the elderly, infants and people suffering from other illnesses. The improper functioning of the colon’s tubular extension, the vermiform appendix leads to the disease of appendicitis.
The process of appendectomy is employed as the surgical treatment of appendicitis. Appendectomy is an uncomplicated operation when it comes to cases of the normal, simpler forms of appendicitis. The physical response generated by most patients undergoing operation is good and complete recovery is certain in a span of few weeks from surgery. But the likelihood of recuperation is lessened in case the treatment of the appendicitis is not undertaken on time.
The treatment of appendicitis is strictly surgical and resumes in the removal of the appendix and draining of a possible formed abscess. The operation is called appendectomy. Antibiotics must be administered before and after surgery to prevent a potential peritonitis. Two methods of removing the appendix are available to surgeons today: classical surgery or laparoscopic surgery; the last mentioned one is more advantageous because of the smaller incision needed and also because the patient recovers faster. In two or three weeks the patient will return to his normal life style independent on the method of appendectomy.
