Jock Itch – Causes And Treatments by Andrew kharker
Jock itch is made by a fungus that sets up on your skin. It’s name is tinea cruris & it’s related to athlete’s foot. Jocks aren’t the only people who get jock itch; men who sweat a lot can also get it, sometimes women as well will contract it.
I needed jock itch treatment to help me cure my jock itch. This ailment isn’t the greatest thing to live with and its very annoying and uncomfortable. I’m very active and sweat more the average and that was the cause I’m sure. I didn’t feel the need to go to the doctor because this particular ailment isn’t that serious.
Jock itch is a fungal infection caused by the fungi Trichophyton rubrum. This skin disease is prevalent during the warm summer months because fungi love to breed in sweaty, warm and moist places, particularly the groin area. If you have the uncontrollable desire to scratch your groin and upper thigh area, you might already be displaying the symptoms of jock itch.
Jock itch gets its name because it is common in people who sweat a lot, like athletes. The medical name for all of these types of fungal infections is a tinea infection, and the medical name for jock itch is tinea cruris (pronounced: tih -nee-uh krur -us). It also often occurs in people who are overweight, but anyone can get the infection. Jock itch may be contagious. Some kinds of fungi live on damp surfaces, like the floors in public showers or locker rooms.
Jock itch is caused from a fungus called Trichophyton rubrum. It can grow anywhere on the body, but most often shows up in the warm, moist areas of the groin. Sweaty or tight-fitting clothing and direct contact with the fungus can lead to a case of jock itch. Jock itch may occur in both men and women, but mostly affects adult men. Like genital herpes, jock itch may be contagious and can be passed from one person to the next by skin-to-skin contact or contact with unwashed clothing.
A common infection mainly of the adult men, Jock itch is a very painful and uncomfortable phenomenon found in the hot countries. Caused by an excessive growth of the fungi Dermatophytes residing in the skin, Jock itch usually occurs when these fungi proliferate in the skin due to moisture. This disease affects the groin area of men but rarely affects the penis in men. Jock itch although more prevalent in men, sometimes affects women also in the groin area only.
This fungus thrives in warm, moist areas. People who sweat a lot are prone to this infection because, the sweat will wash away the normal skin oils that help protect the skin, allowing the fungus to flourish. Obese people are very prone to jock itch also, because it will settle in the skin folds of the lower stomach.
If symptoms are severe, stronger medication may be prescribed, whether as topical creams and ointments or as oral medication. If infection has already occurred due to scratching, antibiotics may also be recommended.
For mild cases of jock itch, you may use anti-fungal creams, powders or ointments. If the problem does not resolve in two weeks, your doctor may prescribe oral anti-fungals. Sometimes, lot of scratching may cause secondary bacterial infections.
Some other diseases that may also cause itching in the groin area are psoriasis, eczema, seborrhoeic dermatitis, candida infections and some other conditions. It is always advised to get a proper diagnosis made by a doctor before you use any anti-fungal over the counter (OTC) medicine. We will look at the causes in the next article.
