Types of Eczema – Symptoms of Different Types of Eczema by Peter hutch
Eczema is a general term for any type of dermatitis or “inflammation of the skin”. The symptoms of almost all the types of eczema cause itching and redness, and some will blister, weep or peel. The degree of severity varies with each individual from a mild form of having dry, easily irritated sensitive skin, to a severe form in which the skin is broken, scaly, raw, bleeding and which can become recurringly infected. There are many different types of eczema.
Atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease characterized by itchy, inflamed skin. Atopic dermatitis is believed to be caused by an abnormal function of the body’s immune system. The condition tends to come and go, depending upon exposures to triggers or causative factors. The most common form of eczema, atopic dermatitis affects about 10% of infants and 3% of adults in the U.S
Another form of eczema is allergic contact dermatitis. An allergy is when your immune system reacts against something, whether it be pollen, food or skin contact. This form of eczema is an allergy to something that contacts the skin, such as nickel, rubber or fragrances. The skin gets red and irritated, and there may be itching or other irritating sensations like stinging. The best treatment for this kind of eczema is to avoid contacting these substances.
discoid eczema is another type of eczema that normally affects middle aged people, this results in small blisters developing on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet, this can be quite a painful condition.
Contact dermatitis – When irritants touch the skin, they can produce two types of contact dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis is direct irritation of the skin. The problem is called allergic contact dermatitis when an allergic reaction occurs in the skin. Irritant contact dermatitis can be caused by prolonged contact with mild irritants such as bubble bath, soap, sweat, saliva, urine and even water. Allergic contact dermatitis only occurs in people who have an allergy to a specific substance
Irritant contact dermatitis
This is a type of eczema caused by frequent contact with everyday substances, such as detergents and chemicals, which are irritating to the skin. It most commonly occurs on the hands of adults and can be prevented by avoiding the irritants and keeping the skin moisturised. It commonly occurs in patients who have atopic dermititis.
Infantile seborrhoeic eczema
A common condition affecting babies under one year old, the exact cause of which is unknown. Also referred to as cradle cap, it usually starts on the scalp or the nappy area and quickly spreads. Although this type of eczema looks unpleasant, it is not sore or itchy and does not cause the baby to feel uncomfortable or unwell. Normally this type of eczema will clear in just a few months, though the use of moisturising creams and bath oils can help to speed this along.
