Most of us wash our faces, care for our homes, wash our clothes and go about our daily business without giving things too much thought. What results are sebaceous glands that go into a type of âhyperdriveâ, super producing oil and plugging pores.
Dissolving dirt does not have to strip oil. A gentle cleanser is best, especially if it also provides a humectant. A humectant is a property that holds moisture and by way of this imparts moisture to whatever surface it finds itself on. Oils are usually humectants, but many are too heavy and cause us to feel greasy. This is especially true of cheap oils, like lanolin, a by product of wool production. Though also a humectant, lanolin has been shown to actually lead to contact dermatitis. Olive oil, shea butter, and castor oil are all high quality humectants that additionally supply nutrients and provide anti-inflammatory properties, taking the sting out of inflamed skin. Anyone suffering from skin conditions, like psoriasis and eczema will appreciate this fact.
Many women find that not stripping their faces and returning it to a neutral state is sufficient for controlling the moisture level. Others, with particularly dry skin, prefer an additional source of moisture. Some women swear by a weekly application of a think layer of olive oil, while some find olive oil too heavy.
