Some people think that all honey is the same. However, different floral nectars could affect the color, texture, flavor and medicinal qualities of the honey. Manuka honey is produced by bees that utilize the nectar from the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), a unique New Zealand plant known for its medicinal properties. The Manuka bush comes from the same family as the Australian Tea Tree, which is also known for its medicinal properties. Beekeepers collect the Manuka honey from the hives in a very short period of time as the Manuka flower only blossoms for about 6 weeks per year.
Many types of honey have the ability to produce low levels of hydrogen peroxide which can be used as an antiseptic. However in recent years, researchers have discovered an additional antibacterial property found in Manuka honey and have identified its antibacterial property as non-hydrogen peroxide activity. This activity is what makes Manuka honey so unique and has given it worldwide acclaim. It has also been discovered that Manuka honey has the highest levels of antioxidants of all honeys and contains healing properties that can be effective in treating a wide range of medical conditions.
Manuka Honey is rated by its antibacterial potency and activity levels which can range from UMF 0 to UMF 25. The non-hydrogen peroxide activity, which has become known as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) has been compared to having the same strength of carbolic acid (phenol). For example, Manuka honey with an activity UMF 10 has an equivalent antibacterial strength of a 10% solution of carbolic acid. The higher the number, the more powerful its antibacterial activity. It has also been noted that the activity in Manuka Honey is similar to wine in that it increases with age. Therefore, Manuka honey that has a potency of UMF 10+ can be retested in 6 months showing its activity level has increased to UMF 16+.
Manuka Honey has no expiration date and, therefore has a very long shelf life. It also contains the highest antioxidant levels of any honey and can help stimulate the immune system and heal infections. When taken orally, Manuka honey can be used for internal conditions such as indigestion, heartburn, diarrhea, stomach ulcers (Helicobacter Pylori), acid reflux and gastrointestinal health. Due to its strong antibacterial components and acidity (pH levels of 3.2 to 4.5), Manuka honey is extremely effective in the treatment of sore throats (Streptococcus Pyogenes), tooth decay and gum disease. Research proves that the antibacterial potency of Manuka honey is 10 to 50 times more powerful than is needed to stop the growth of antibiotic-resistant (Staphylococcus Aureus), the superbug that causes MRSA.
Externally, Manuka honey can be used to treat a number of bacterial skin infections, healing wounds and reducing inflammation. It can be applied to the skin to heal eczema, burns, fungal infections, acne and scarring. For Acne a thin layer of Manuka Honey can be applied directly onto the skin and left to dry overnight. This can be applied using your fingertip or cotton swabs. As a first aid treatment, Manuka Honey can be applied to wounds and burns to promote natural healing. Make sure the wound is clean before applying Manuka Honey and apply it directly to the affected area. Cover with a bandage and keep dry. Change dressing at least once a day.
For stomach ulcers, take a teaspoon of Manuka honey three to four times a day, ideally one hour before meals and again at bedtime on an empty stomach. It also helps to put the honey on bread or cracker. This holds the honey in the stomach for as long as possible. You can adjust the amount and frequency to suit your own needs. For sore throats and colds, take a teaspoon three times per day and let it drip down your throat when you feel a slight cold coming on.
