Eczema is one of those problems that never seems to go away. Those who have it know how difficult it can be to live with it. Some days are better than others and the bad days are horrible, where just about anything can set you off. You have to be extremely careful what soaps you use. There are many theories as to what eczema is and whether or not it is a chronic disorder. Some facts that both allopaths and naturopaths can agree on is that eczema is a skin disorder. It exhibits itself as skin lesions and rashes that itch mercilessly. It is aggravated by certain factors, both internal, like specific foods, and external, like dyes and topical ingredients. Eczema may be as mild as a rash or as severe as patches that ooze and bleed. Often times, the condition is also associated with allergies and may in fact worsen when the person is exposed to that allergen. Eczema patches often appear in the creases of skin, like behind the knees or in the insides of elbows and the skin suffering from this condition often appears as if it were extremely dried out. This is where the agreements end.
Allopaths believe that eczema is a life-long or chronic condition, but seem at odds as to its cause. They point to genetics, indicating the fact that family members often share the predisposition. They also believe that it cannot be cured, only treated. A normal course of action would be to put the affected person on antihistamines and treat the condition topically with a prescription that often further dries the skin and, even more often, makes the patient extremely vulnerable to sun sensitivity. They may even prescribe an eczema soap, but, usually, this is something that further dries the skin.
Naturopaths have a completely different picture of eczema. Akin somewhat to allopaths, naturopaths do believe that eczema is a form of the body’s reaction to some irritant, but naturopaths are more inclined to find the root cause of the problem, not believing the condition need to be suffered life-long. Eczema soaps recommended by naturopaths are more likely to be beneficial to the skin in promoting healing.
