There seems to be so much confusion on allergic reactions. This article is just an effort to provide information that could save a life and dispel most of the prevailing confusion in the minds of people.
As common as allergic reactions are their triggers or causing factors can vary widely as can the resulting symptoms. Thankfully the severest allergic reaction resulting in death from anaphylaxis is rare.
Anaphylaxis is the severest allergic reaction of all which circulates quickly and causes dangerous symptoms in the body. It can cause serious consequences as the patient generally has difficulty breathing and may undergo shock, which may result in death.
The first time a person is exposed to a trigger or cause, such as a bee sting it will not cause anaphylaxis but results in what is referred to as sensitization. Now that the person has become sensitized to the trigger, in this case a bee sting, the next time they are stung it is possible for them to suffer from anaphylaxis.
There is no way of knowing when anaphylaxis will result from exposure to the trigger, it may be the second time or several exposures may be necessary. Also how fast it takes for anaphylaxis to strike is unpredictable, it usually results within minutes but there can also be a delayed reaction.
It is when the body’s immune system overreacts to an antigen on recognizing a foreign substance in the body that anaphylaxis occurs. The WBC produce antibodies when reacting with the antigen; and these antibodies circulate the bloodstream to attach to some cells of the body.
Cell in the body manufacture chemicals called ‘mediators’ when the antibodies contact an antigen. Mediators such as histamine are what cause an allergic reaction in the body.
There are many triggers for anaphylaxis; and only a trace amount of this trigger is sufficient to start a severe allergic reaction. These triggers to severe allergic reactions may be prescription and over the counter medications, venom of stinging insects, food additives, substances like latex, some foods like shellfish and nuts, dyes used in radiology procedures and transfusion of blood or blood products.
There are situations where the trigger of severe allergic reactions is not known too. It is usually people who suffer from hay fever, asthma and eczema who are more likely to suffer from anaphylactic reactions than those who don’t suffer from them.
Difficulty breathing from swelling and/or spasms in the airways and loss of consciousness is a most terrifying life threatening experience. Here loss of consciousness comes with low blood pressure, and is referred to as ‘shock’. Both the heart and breathing can stop in rare cases.
When suffering from severe allergic reactions, you should not try to ‘wait it out’ at home. Instead, go to the nearest emergency department or ambulance.
Try not to panic while waiting for the ambulance, settle down and attempt to discover what caused the allergic reaction. Take an antihistamine as long as you don’t have trouble swallowing or inject yourself or have someone else inject you with epinephrine if you have a kit.
I didn’t write this article to help you accomplish ultra- knowledge about severe allergic reactions, but to alert you to the dangers of the situation and provide you with the basics to assist you.
