What You Need To Know About Allergic Reactions During Dental Treatments by Zyra Robinson
Some patients experience allergic reactions during dental treatments, making them extremely uncomfortable at the dentist’s chair. According to oral care experts from Dental Carrollton, the three distinct classifications of allergic reactions are the immediate allergy, the delayed allergy (also known as allergic contact dermatitis, and irritant contact dermatitis. They said that each type has its own allergen, the agent that causes the allergic response. When an allergic reaction takes place, the body’s response to the allergen may or may not involve the immune system of the patient.
A dentist in Carrollton said that the immediate allergic reaction happens when a patient is exposed to plant-based proteins in natural rubber latex products in a dental environment. Examples of these types of products are treatment gloves, rubber dams, hoses, and rubber stoppers in local anesthetic. What happens is that a systemic or body wide immune system response or allergic reaction is elicited by allergen. Because of this, the reaction can take place anywhere in the patient’s entire body.
Dentists in Carrollton, who have treated patients who suffered from such allergic reaction, said that the symptoms can occur within minutes of exposure. It includes swelling, burning, tightness, itching, redness and tingling of the skin. When this happens, asthma, wheezing, bronchospasm, coughing, and sneezing would take place and affect the lungs. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, hypotension (low blood pressure), tachycardia (high heart rate), and anaphylactic shock. But they said that these symptoms would cease a few hours after the allergen is removed. The potential risk factors also include allergic reactions to kiwis, bananas, avocados, chestnuts, and tomatoes. A history of allergic reactions to latex balloons, condoms, gloves or any other natural rubber product is also a potential risk factor.
According to a dentist in Flower Mound, a delayed allergic reaction happens when is a patient is expose to chemicals that are used in processing natural and synthetic rubber. It means allergens are found in all the same products where there are natural rubber latex proteins. Because these chemicals elicit a localized allergic reaction, it is usually confined to the contact area of exposed skin. The symptoms for this type of reaction usually take hours or days before they would manifest themselves. These consist of soreness, itching, cracking, peeling, crusting, drying, swelling, thickening, redness, scaling, papule, or vesicle formation of the skin. These symptoms would seize a few weeks after allergen is removed. Potential risk factors include a history of skin allergies, skin reactions, eczema or dermatitis.
Irritant contact dermatitis, on the other hand, happens when a patient is exposed to chemicals such as detergents, acids, oils, solvents, and continued exposure to abrasive, caustic or wet environments, according to dentists in Flower Mound. These chemicals are usually found at home and at the work place. The allergens that are present in these products elicit a localized inflammatory response from the patient, with no immune system involvement. This leads to an allergic reaction of an exposed skin. It takes place within a few minutes to an hour after contact with the allergen. Some symptoms include soreness, burning, stinging, redness, swelling and blisters. But they would soon cease once allergen is removed. Potential risk factors include a history of allergies, skin reactions, eczema and dermatitis.
There are several types of allergic reactions to dental treatments that patients should know about before getting that oral treatment from your dentist, warned Dental Carrollton oral care experts.
